A career counselor can assist you with finding a job in many ways.
They are experienced working with all levels of job seekers and can help you
determine your strengths in order to maximize your success in the job market.
Counselors often use skill and interest assessments to help you define suitable
occupations. They can offer practical guidance to skills training, developing
your resume, writing cover letters, thank you notes and other job search correspondence.
Consider scheduling time with a career counselor for:
- Help with job loss transition.
- Defining career goals, providing resources for career assessments, transferable
skills analyses.
- Evaluation for education retraining/academic skills improvement.
- Labor market information.
- Job search strategies such as preparing for interviews, informational interviews,
where to find the hidden job market, how to fill out job applications and
information on hiring practices.
- Networking information such as job clubs, job fairs and workshops.
Where to find a career counselor:
- Check the Minnesota WorkForce Centers to determine what
services you may be eligible for. The WorkForce Centers offers workshops often
led by counseling professionals and are open to the public.
- The Career Center at your alma mater may provide career services to alumni.
